March 27, 2023 (download minutes) – The vestry decided major church roof repairs can’t wait due to increasing water damage from leaks in the roof. Several members were elected to executive committee: Connie Semans (Senior Warden), Liz Sappenfield (Junior Warden), Ginny Bowman (Treasurer) and Rebecca Hix (Clerk).

April 24, 2023 (download minutes) – The vestry certified Kelly Ryan’s candidacy for the vocational diaconate. After hearing from the finance committee and the renovation task force, the vestry voted on a plan to replace our leaky roof with an historically appropriate and environmentally responsible slate roof.
May 22, 2023 (download minutes) – The vestry voted to support UMD’s discernment process around building a new homeless services center. Everything is on track for the roof renovation, with work beginning the week of June 12. Elizabeth Newman, chair of the Harris Property Discernment Committee, updated the vestry on The Trees’ discernment. The vestry would like members of the congregation to prayerfully consider serving as youth leaders.
June 26, 2023 (download minutes) – The vestry approved Ryals Minister for Youth Terrill Lloyd’s proposal for improving the youth space in the parish house basement. Junior Warden Liz Sappenfield gave a roof project update. The roof work is on schedule and on budget, and the vestry is grateful to the team leading this effort. The Rev. Maryann Younger updated the vestry on already announced staffing changes in executive session. The vestry discussed the ongoing campus study work and began planning a parish-wide Campus Study Wednesday night dinner in late July to continue gathering parish input on our role in UMD’s potential expansion.

August 28, 2023 (download minutes) – The vestry signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Urban Ministries of Durham, saying we commit to supporting UMD’s discernment for a new multi-service homeless center. This MOU will allow UMD to apply for funding for a feasibility study. The vestry reviewed the annual audit report and voted to accept the finance committee’s recommendation of approval. The vestry received an update that a new HVAC system would be installed this week on the second floor of the parish hall.
September 25, 2023 (download minutes) – The vestry met with the stewardship committee about the 2024 stewardship campaign, discussing goal-setting and messaging. The vestry discussed on-going staffing changes with the rector. Junior Warden Liz Sappenfield gave updates on the conclusion of the roof project and other building repairs. The vestry approved a proposal from the Harris Property Discernment Committee to pay The Trees’ caretaker-in-residence a stipend.
October 23, 2023 (download minutes) – The Harris Property Discernment Committee gave an update about the ongoing discernment at The Trees. The vestry is thankful and excited about the children and youth ministries at St. Philip’s; currently there are 68 children and youth involved in our programming. The vestry was excited about the great St. Philip’s Day celebration on October 15. The next class of vestry members will be elected at our upcoming annual meeting in a few months. November 27, 2023 (download minutes) – The vestry unanimously endorsed Kelly Ryan’s candidacy to become a vocational deacon. Junior warden Liz Sappenfield presented a final accounting of the roof renovation project, noting we came in under budget and on time for this phase of the church renovation project. The vestry noted that Maryann was elected to diocesan council at the recent annual diocesan convention. The vestry invites parishioners to ponder how their time and talents could contribute to church leadership.
December 18, 2023 (download minutes) – The vestry convened at Maryann’s house for a festive December meeting. Vestry members approved continuing the 2023 budget levels into 2024, when a new budget will be approved. The vestry discussed the upcoming Epiphany chili cook-off and the exciting news coverage of our UMD partnership. The vestry encourages parishioners to consider running for election to the vestry.
