ACTION: Feed the hungry
Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ – Matthew 25:37-40
Did you know that Urban Ministries of Durham distributes bags of groceries to 125 needy individuals and families EVERY WEEK? Each bag typically contains some combination of the following: cereal, oatmeal/grits, boxes with individual packets, canned ravioli, beefaroni, lasagna, etc., canned fruit (16 oz), canned vegetables (NOT beans), canned soup, boxes of macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, pasta sauce (in PLASTIC jar), pasta (spaghetti, elbows, rigatoni, etc.).
Our Stewardship in Action goal is to collect enough food by September 26 to fill 125 bags with the items from this list. Please give according to your means – every donation is significant. For some, this might mean contributing a few cans of fruit, while others may be able to head to Costco or Sam’s Club and contribute several cases of pasta and pasta sauce. If you are part of a ministry at St. Philip’s, we urge you to work together with other members of that ministry to encourage, coordinate, and maximize your donations. Â
Shop early and often – it’s not necessary to wait until September 26! Please bring your contributions to St. Philip’s any day during regular office/service hours. Bins and boxes can be found in the church narthex, in the church office, and in the Parish Hall. We will also have curbside drop-off in the church parking lot on Saturday, September 18 (10:00 am-12:00 noon) and Saturday, September 25 (12:00 noon – 2:00 pm). We’ll keep a running tally and provide email updates periodically.Â
And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were leftover. Matthew 14:19-20
Jesus began by giving thanks for the fish and loaves, and this food drive is an opportunity to give thanks to the Father for the abundance of food available to us every day. Let’s see how many baskets of extra food we have after feeding the 125!
Thank you!
