We hear their names in church most Sundays but know nothing about their circumstances, other than that they are being detained in the Durham County jail and have asked that we pray for them. How old are they? Do they have families? Friends? What were their lives like before finding themselves in jail? Since 1984 the Durham County Jail Ministry has reached out to provide support in various forms to these detainees. This ecumenical ministry that includes several St. Philip’s parishioners has served these incarcerated individuals, now at the fringes of society, bringing hope and restoration. Pre-COVID-19, the members of the Jail Ministry met weekly with detainees in person. The pandemic has necessitated a shift to remote meetings, and for various reasons, has resulted in a decline in the number of volunteers participating. In the accompanying video, we hear more about this ministry from Mike Sistrom, a member at St. Philip’s for over 20 years. Mike is deeply committed to this work and has a broader vision regarding the opportunities to do more, particularly in helping detainees transition back into the community. If you feel called to learn more about ministering this ministry, contact Mike directly at msistrom@gmail.com.
