Rector’s Sabbatical
May 1โAugust 1, 2026
The Rev. Maryann D. Younger will be on sabbatical from May 1โAugust 1, 2026. Please join us in praying for a rejuvenating and restful time away for Maryann!
What is a sabbatical?

A sabbatical is essentially an extended sabbath โย a time of stillness, holy quiet and rejuvenation. During this lengthy time apart from work-a-day cares, clergy have the opportunity for deep rest, deepening connection with the Holy Spirit, reconnection with purpose, and a return with renewed energy. This caretaking break can be wholesome both for Maryann and for our congregation.
Maryann says, “Sabbaticals are a normal and healthy rhythm in clergy life, helping both clergy and congregations flourish over time. Theyโre an extension of the fourth commandment to keep Sabbath, and they echo the wisdom of the Hebrew Scriptures, which call for the land to periodically rest and lie fallow so new life and growth can emerge. This season is both spiritual and practical โ a time of renewal and deep listening that supports healthy, long-term leadership.” Read more here
Questions and Answers
Who will handle Maryann’s duties during the sabbatical?
Our Associate Rector Gabe Lamazares will serve as Acting Rector. Gabe will organize our worship, oversee the staff and collaborate with the vestry.
Gabe will be supported by our priest associates, Lisa, Stephen and Jim, as well as others (many of whom will be familiar faces) who will serve and preach for a Sunday or two.

Who do I contact if I need help?
- Pastoral care: Gabe Lamazares
- Administrative questions (pledges, membership, ministry support): Contact the office and speak with our interim parish administrator
- Other parish issues: Senior Warden Marty Nelson or Junior Warden Mike Uhl
- Church renovation questions: Sacred Spaces Co-Chairs Connie Semans and Liz Sappenfield
What will be different at St. Philip’s during the sabbatical?
We’ll have many guest preachers bringing us fresh perspectives. Maryann’s sabbatical will largely overlap with the summer season, when formation programming takes a break and we typically simplify our offerings.
Our worship schedule will stay the same: Sundays at 8am, 9am, and 11am, and Wednesdays at 5:30pm.
Summer worship in the parish hall: When church renovations get underway, all worship will be in the parish hall for 8โ10 weeks this summer. More about summer renovations
What will Maryann do during her sabbatical?
Maryann is planning to spend a good deal of time with her family, especially with her grandchildren. She’ll have extended time for her annual silent retreat. She’ll also do some traveling and enjoy time for her hobbies.
During this time, Maryann will not be in touch with the day-to-day workings of St. Philip’s. She will not be checking social media, her phone or St. Philip’s email.
How can I help?
Respect Maryann’s time apart and her privacy. Hold her in your prayers. Please don’t seek her out, but do say hello if you bump into her around town.
Please also be supportive of Gabe and patient with the staff. It may take a little longer than usual to respond to requests, especially since we’ll be operating with an interim parish administrator.
